Valley Road school
building history
The 1904 built Neo-Classical style school building was designed by the Boston architectural firm Little and Brown. The school remained in operation until it was closed in the 1980's. Saved from demolition, the building was comprehensively rehabilitated to serve multiple functions, and leased by the town on a long-term basis to the Nahant Preservation Trust. With a combination of non-profit and commercial purposes, it now serves as a senior center, historical society archives and exhibition room, activity space for scouts and young people, and assembly space hosting ballroom dancing, meetings and lectures. Over half of the space is leased for general and professional offices, generating revenues for building operations and upkeep. The project received an Adaptive Reuse Award from the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
